A camp shirt offers several outfit options: buttoned with trousers, paired with shorts, or open over a plain tee. Decide how you want to wear it, then check whether the cut and fabric suit that use. The main image is a styling illustration, not a photograph of a specific product.
What is a camp shirt?
It is a button-front shirt, often with short sleeves, whose collar opens and lies flat across the upper chest. You may see the shape described as a camp collar or Cuban collar. Those names describe the collar; fabrics and measurements vary by design.
MANLY’s lyocell camp shirt is one example, with a button front and chest pocket. Look at the collar and cut in the photographs, then check measurements before selecting a size.
How do you choose a lightweight camp shirt?
What should you check in the fabric?
Read the composition, fabric weight if provided, and care instructions. “Lightweight” is not a specific measurement, and a texture photograph cannot establish breathability or drying speed. Ask for details about the actual garment when you need them.
If you can try it on, assess the feel and transparency in normal light. A pale colour or linen-like texture does not establish fibre composition. If the listing says lyocell, our lyocell guide explains what to check.
How do you know whether the fit works?
Compare chest width, body length, shoulders and sleeves with a shirt you like, following the product chart’s method. Button it, sit down and reach forward. Notice pulling across the chest or back and where the hem finishes.
If you plan to wear it over a tee, try both layers together. Check for sleeves bunching and enough room across the body. Use the model’s fit note and measurements rather than automatically sizing up. If you want a long, roomy shirt, choose with those proportions in mind.
How can you style it with your wardrobe?
| Outfit | Example | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| With shorts | Pale shirt and navy shorts | Shirt length over the shorts |
| With trousers | Khaki shirt and dark trousers | The cut while standing and sitting |
| Open over a tee | Blue shirt and white tee | Room for both layers at chest and sleeves |
For university or a workplace that permits casual clothing, try the shirt buttoned with straight trousers and trainers. For a shorts outfit, compare the proportions in our wide-leg shorts guide.
For an open shirt, start with a plain tee you already own. MANLY’s heavyweight cotton tee in white is an example of a colour choice. It is a heavier tee, so assess it according to your preference for layers. Try it with the shirt rather than assuming that any white tee is lightweight.
Do colours need to be neutral or matching?
Off-white, grey and khaki are options if they work with your wardrobe. If you like stripes or prints, try a plain bottom in a colour from the shirt. These are ideas you can adapt to your own taste.
You can also pair a shirt and shorts in similar shades. Our coordinated summer outfit guide compares matching sets and separates, including what to consider when you wear different sizes on top and bottom.
What should you check before ordering and washing?
Look at the pockets, buttons and sleeve hems. Make sure the details you want belong to the exact colour and model you are ordering. Review measurements and the exchange policy, then follow the garment’s label for washing, drying and ironing. Camp shirts do not all need the same care.
