260 vs 300 GSM cotton: what should you choose?

One tee says 260 GSM and another says 300 GSM. What changes? The figures tell you the fabric’s weight for a given area. How the tee falls on you, whether you like its feel and where the sleeves finish still require clear photographs, measurements and a look at the garment itself.

This guide explains what to compare before ordering. The main image illustrates fabrics; it does not show samples we weighed or a tested comparison between two MANLY products.

What does GSM mean for cotton?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. A square metre of 260 GSM fabric weighs 260 grams; the same area of 300 GSM fabric weighs 300 grams. It is a measure of mass per area, rather than thickness.

Composition is a separate detail. Check whether the garment is 100% cotton or a blend and read any listed percentages. The fibre description and fabric weight answer different questions. A complete tee also contains a particular amount of fabric and other components, so weighing it on a scale does not directly give its GSM.

What is the numerical difference between 260 and 300 GSM?

Is 300 GSM better quality or more likely to keep its shape?

Do not judge quality from weight alone. Look at side seams, hems, collar construction and the feel of the fabric. If stability after washing matters, ask about that model. There is no basis here for saying every 300 GSM tee outperforms every 260 GSM tee.

How do you compare thickness and drape?

If you have both pieces, try them in the same lighting with the same trousers or shorts. Check transparency, how the fabric falls from the shoulder and where the hem ends. Sit and raise your arms, noticing any pulling or bunching. This helps you choose the appearance and feel you prefer.

Which weight is better for Kuwait’s heat?

Decide where you will wear the tee: work in air conditioning, errands or long periods outdoors. Weight alone cannot tell us whether to recommend 260 or 300 GSM. A pale colour or wide fit does not guarantee cooling either. The summer T-shirt guide helps you organise checks around your day.

For training, try your workout movements before deciding on fit. Our gym T-shirt guide covers collars, sleeves and length in motion, along with checking any performance feature you need.

Should you choose heavier fabric for an oversized look?

Oversized describes a cut; GSM describes fabric weight. Different cuts can use the same weight. Compare chest, shoulders, sleeves and length with a garment you like. Do not automatically size up because the fabric is heavier.

Our oversized-versus-sizing-up comparison uses two real garments to explain different cuts. Those measurements do not establish the fabrics’ GSM or performance in heat.

What should you check on the product page?

Confirm that the figure belongs to the exact model and is expressed in grams per square metre. One catalogue example is MANLY’s heavyweight cotton tee, listed as 100% cotton at 250 GSM. That differs from both figures in this article. It is a product specification, not our independent measurement or a tested comparison with 260 and 300 GSM.

Ask for missing weight or sizing information. Follow the care label for washing, drying and ironing. Consider weight alongside fit, feel and intended use, without attaching promises the number cannot establish.

Fabric-weight reference: ASTM D3776, mass per unit area of fabric. The calculation 300 − 260 = 40 grams per square metre explains the difference between the values; it is not a MANLY product test.
